It’s a setting we all dream of: staying in a cozy mountain hut, opening the door in the morning to a winter wonderland and the slopes right before our eyes. Yet, dreams are sometimes hard to fulfill. Finding the perfect cabin, checking availability, getting there with all your gear… So why not just turn your mobile home into a cabin on wheels?
#1 The perfect site
When you are planning to set out with your mobile home in wintertime, make sure to define your plans as precisely as possible: what do you expect from your destination and your camping site? Are you going on a family trip and need easy access to toboggan runs or are you a powder-hunting freerider? Do you want to skin up remote terrains, hike tracks with snowshoes or race steep slopes? Do you need a ski locker or a spa – or both? The clearer your expectations the easier it will be to find the right camping site.
A great selection of all-season sites close to ski resorts in the Alps:
- Camping Pradafenz, Churwalden, Switzerland
- RinerLodge, Davos, Switzerland
- Caravanpark Sexten, South Tyrol, Italy
- Sportcamp Wolferlgut, Austria
- Camping Sölden, Austria
Oli Dorn’s favourite pick is in the Engadin in Switzerland: “My family loves the camping site Morteratsch. It’s a dream for all wintersports fans: the ski resorts are easy to reach with the free ski bus and after a long day riding you can just leave your skis or snowboard in the spacious ski room. And then it’s sauna time – with an amazing view on the massive Bernina mountain range.”
#2 The key equipment
When you are traveling in wintertime you need a vehicle suitable for the cold season – equipped with heating and insulation, a given for all SUNLIGHT models. “If you want to live your vanlife winter adventures you need to have your snow chains on board. A gadget I also bring: a dryer for my boots, which I keep all winter long in the rear garage. The next morning, I step into dry and warm boots.”
#3 The cabin feeling
With a little bit of prep you can create a cozy cabin inspired winter home. How about a fire bowl outside, lanterns or the SPIN table fire of the small expert brand Höfats? Add some cushions and a soft extra blanket – and, of course, fairy lights.
“Winter camping has such a special feel to it. In summertime you spend so much time outside, but in the cold season my SUNLIGHT T 68 is even more of a nest for me. Outside the air is clear, it’s dark and so quiet, and it’s just one step into a warm, cozy cabin – parked in a beautiful spot, preferably in a deep powder landscape…”
